CHAPTER FOUR

The silence in the truck was becoming unbearable. Michael didn’t want their last interaction today to be Jimmy shutting down and shutting him out, he had to make him talk. “I want a relationship with you Jimmy. I will go as slow as you want, but I won’t go away.” He registered Jimmy’s surprise and pinned him with a burning stare before he continued. “You want me too. Don’t deny it and please don’t fight it. I won’t hurt you and I know I could help you if you’d let me.”

Jimmy was taken aback by Michael’s bold honesty and scary insight, but he was also afraid of what his words meant. “You say you want me, but you don’t know me. You have no idea who I am.” Jimmy didn’t look at Michael, but he could feel his eyes on him.

“Then tell me who you are Jimmy.” Michael stated to the road in front of him.

“I’m nobody Michael, just nobody.”

They reached the house that Lincoln shared with his partner Bruce and Michael turned to look at Jimmy directly. “You’re Jimmy Frost and everything about you sets me on fire so I will see you tomorrow.” He reached out his hand. “Give me your phone.” Jimmy handed it to him without a word. “This is my personal number, call me if you want to talk. I’m not giving up. Push all you want, but I’m not walking away.” He handed the phone back.

Jimmy gave a guarded glance at the man who took such complete control and seemed so sure of himself. He grabbed his duffle bag and got out of the truck. Michael pulled out and left while Jimmy stood in the driveway for a few more minutes and just stared, not sure of what had just happened.

Michael went straight to his office anxious to look into James Frost. He had state of the art equipment that could ferret out any information he wanted on anyone and right now he needed to understand Jimmy.

Jimmy spent the evening with Lincoln catching up and getting to know each other and the changes in their lives. “I’m impressed that you are pursuing your horticultural degree online. Adam said you’d changed your mind when I questioned your decision to go with a liberal arts degree.” Jimmy said. They sat together in the living room. Bruce was working and would not be home till quite late.

“It was his choice, not mine.” Lincoln sounded bitter, but also resigned. “He always got what he wanted from me. I was too tired or scared to oppose him and I tried so hard for his approval.”

“None of us ever got his approval Lincoln.” Jimmy informed gravely. “Danny and I were always reminded that we were disappointments. Danny wasn’t moving up through the ranks fast enough and I was just a grunt according to him. We were all held hostage by our need for his approval.” Jimmy reached out and patted his brother on the knee. “It wasn’t just you kid, he hated us all.
